4 easy trails to do in Rio de Janeiro
If you are new to hiking and looking for a breathtaking view of Rio de Janeiro, start with these 4 incredible trails!
Morro da Urca
Morro da Urca, with its beautiful 220 meters high, has at its peak the first cable car terminal towards the Sugarloaf Mountain. To go up to the first stop at Pão de Açúcar, it is 1.5 kilometers from the route that starts at Praia Vermelha, passes through Pista Claudio Coutinho and ends at the summit of Morro da Urca. The trail lasts approximately 30 minutes and arriving at the hill you have a wonderful view of the city.
To get off, you have the option to buy the cable car to Pão de Açúcar. To return, it costs R $ 39, however, if you wait until sunset at 19:40, it goes down for free.
Pedra Bonita
Pedra Bonita is the easiest trail and has a stunning view of Pedra da Gavea, and the climb in a maximum of 20-30 minutes! It has parking to leave the car and the view from there is wonderful, to Pedra da Gavea, Cristo Redentor, Morro Dois Irmãos, Praia de São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca! The trail opens at 8:00 am but many people arrive illegally to watch the sun rise. On that same rock you can fly hang gliding and paragliding.
Telegraph Stone
This is the famous trail that has the stone that looks like you are falling, but it is just an illusion because there is a stone underneath. The trail lasts approximately 40 minutes uphill and the path is beautiful. It starts at Guaratiba Beach, more than an hour by Uber from the South Zone, as it is in the west of Rio de Janeiro. Avoid peak hours because you usually have hours and hours of lines to take pictures on this rock. Go early on weekdays and avoid weekends and holidays.
Morro dos Dois Irmãos
The trail starts at the top of Morro do Vidigal. To get there, call an uber to the beginning of the hill, take a moto taxi, which costs 5 reais and it will drop you off at the top where the trail starts. It takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to climb, depending on your pace.
There are 1.5 km of steep stretches and others not so much. The trail is considered relatively easy and, when you reach the summit, you can see the entire South Zone of Rio.
From Ipanema Beach Hostel, you can quickly reach the Vidigal community in Uber and from there take a motorcycle taxi to start the trail. If you are a beginner on trails, these are great trails to start and challenge yourself!
